Blog Post 1- Dispo

Hi everyone! My name is Sophie Magwood and I am in my third year at Laurier majoring in Communications Studies. One of my favourite apps to use at the moment is a photography/social media app called “Dispo”. Dispo is a photo sharing app that was co-founded by YouTuber David Dobrik. The app allows you to take disposable pictures within a shared roll with your friends- you cannot view these pictures however until 9:00am the next day when they are “developed”. The app is a fun blend between being a photography app and social media platform, allowing you to capture memories from nights out with friends and even leave comments on the pictures the next day.

I would love to know what apps or social media platforms everyone else uses the most for photography?!

  1. Hi Sophie!

I loved the topic you chose for this week as I have also been using the “Dispo” app this past year and I really like its concept! I have found it is a great way to capture photos with friends without taking it too seriously or taking us out of the moment. In terms of your question, I often use the VSCO app to edit and upload my pictures. Personally, I find that editing photos on VSCO is very straightforward yet has various features and filters. Also, I like posting my photos on VSCO because I feel it reaches a smaller number of people in comparison to other social media platforms. In other words, I feel this allows me to feel less pressure of what I'm posting by just having my close friends view my photos!

    1. Hey Taylor! Thanks for your response to my blog post! I also love to use VSCO- I completely agree it is way less pressuring to upload photos there than on other platforms such as Instagram. As much as I love Instagram, I actually enjoy VSCO more since it doesn't really have all the social norms attached to it as Instagram does (such as not to post more than once a day). I love to just upload 20 pictures at a time to VSCO and not feel the pressure of getting enough "likes" or "comments" as Instagram does.

  2. Hi Sophie!

When I was first reading your post, I thought that I had this app on my phone, however, I realized that I use an app called "Huji". I'm happy I came across your post, because I've been wanting to try "Dispo"! I saw it advertised on TikTok and other social media platforms, but never ended up downloading it.

The app Huji looks very similar to Dispo, however, it is solely a photography app. The pictures also "develop" within seconds instead of the next day. I like the idea of having to wait until the next day to see the photo, as it keeps you more in the moment. Thank you for sharing, I am excited to try it out!

  3. Hi Sophie! Great post!

I was unaware of this app but thank you so much for bringing it to my attention. This app is really cool and it is like having a disposable camera but online. This looks like a great way for individuals to have fun but also capture every moment and I think that it is interesting how the photos do not develop until the next day. This factor allows individuals to have fun and not worry about how they look on camera which is something that is becoming more valued. Thank you for sharing and I am now going to download it!

  4. Hey Sophie!

Cool blog topic! I have been wanting to try this app out for a while but was always turned off by the idea of waiting to see how the pictures turned out! For me I love the immediacy of photography apps such as Huji (which is a similar app), because I get to see the photo and decide if I'd like more. But then again theres something special about waiting for the picture to be "developed" that kind of adds a special surprise in the morning! I think that I am going to check it out, thanks for the recommendation!

  5. Hello Sophie,

Your post intrigued me because I am also a user of the app. When the app first launched, I was very excited because as I'm sure you know, film photos have become very trendy recently, and disposable cameras can be very costly. Both for the purchase of the camera and the development of the film. I was also very excited because I really enjoy David Dobrik's vlogs, and it was actually in his videos where I first saw the promotion of the app. I think the concept of the app is very interesting as it makes the user feel as if they're using a physical disposable camera because they have to wait to see their photos. The app I use most often for photography is VSCO, which shares a similar aspect of being able to share your photos with friends. The app is both an editing app and a social media app, as you can post your edited photos on your profile for your followers to see.

  6. Hi Sophie!
Great post this week! Dispo is currently one of my favourite social media/photography apps as well! I love that you can create albums and share the photos you took with friends so that no one ever misses a shot! I also like the feature that makes the images you took to show up only after a certain period mimicking a real disposable camera! Currently, the apps I use for photography include VSCO. I love to edit photos from my camera roll on the app Instagram, as I love to take pictures using pre-set Instagram filters, and Snapchat is the most accessible app for catching moments on the go.

  7. Hey Sophie,

I am also an avid user of dispo, I have used all the time this summer, I think what is so great about it is the fact that it forces you to be in the moment, you are not concerned with how you look in the photo, or asked to take another. I also like how it you can do shared rolls, and easily print them; I have a few rolls shared with friends and it allows us easily to check up on eachother's summer adventures!
