Blog Post 1 - Social Media Investigation - Kayla Pelly

The Gabby Petito case has gained global attention and is extremely interesting to watch unfold on social media. Gabby Petito is a 22-year-old who was traveling across the United States with her finance and was reported missing earlier this week. Unfortunately on September 19th, police found remains that were consistent with Gabby’s description. Prior to her body being found, social media users took interest in the case and conducted their own “investigation”. Numerous Tik Tok and YouTube videos have been made about the case and users from around the world have come together to piece up evidence.

I find this very interesting as it demonstrates the power and reach of the internet. The search for an American woman became a global sensation. This YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy3jdWcFam8&t=8s analyzes details of the case, which is just one example of the many videos made.

  1. Hi!

Great post this week! I appreciate the fact that you chose to discuss this case for your blog post this week as it is so prevalent on social media right now. Just yesterday me and my roommates were discussing the case and reading news articles about it. Apparently the fiancé was seen in Toronto by a flight attendant, but who knows if this is true or not. I find the case to be really scary, but it is also interesting as you said, because information can spread so quickly on the internet. It is also interesting how individuals are speculating what might of happened.

Thanks for sharing that video! I'll be sure to give it a watch!

  2. Love this post!! This story has been on my fyp on tiktok for days now and it is so scary how fast the internet spread this case around. It is very unfortunate what happened to Gabby but I do not doubt that in the next few days Brian will be found through someone on the internet. This case reminds me of the Netflix doc "don't f*ck with cats" were people on Facebook were doing deep dives and solving this huge murder mystery through the internet.

  3. I really liked your post! I think it is pretty crazy how much power and reach social media and the internet have as well. TikTok is actually how I first found out about the Gabby Petito case. I was scrolling and found a girl talking about the current updates of what was going on and she actually had a series that I ended up just listening to and scrolling through that went over all of the information. This is the case with a lot of other issues and news stories that people end up covering them on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
