Coach Lasso's tunes

Hello CS-371,

My name is Dylan Gowanlock and I am extremely excited to go through this course with all of you this term!

I have recently been watching the Disney+ series 'Ted Lasso'. As an avid soccer fan who has a deep passion for film, sport, music and different cultures I have been in a rather euphoric state ever since discovering the show. The show is currently airing weekly, with the most recent episode as of September 20, 2021, being Season 2 Episode 9. As I am writing this, 'Ted Lasso' just recently had a massive night taking home four trophies at the 2021 Emmy Awards, topping all of its comedy competitors.

As I mentioned, I have a deep love for music and the creations of others. I would say Spotify is the application I use the most on my phone. On rotation for a few months now has been a playlist of the soundtrack to 'Ted Lasso', which can be found here. I have many favourite tunes on the playlist, however Award Tour by A Tribe Called Quest, Khala My Friend by Amanaz, She's A Rainbow by The Rolling Stones, and Caroline by Arlo Parks have all yet to make it more than two days without playing through my headphones at some point.

'Ted Lasso' has been a lot of fun to both watch and listen to as it is a show that tackles a number of incredibly important social and environmental issues including sexism and gender discrimination, corporate pollution and harm to the environment, mental health and addiction, racism among many others. Again, the playlist showcasing the soundtrack to both seasons 1 and 2 (thus far) can be found at the link posted below.

  1. Hey Dylan,

I am also a huge fan of Ted Lasso. The show acts a very entertaining and funny representation of soccer culture in the United Kingdom. European culture embraces the sport in a way that many North Americans can't wrap their heads around. Both the viewer and the show's main character Ted Lasso learn more about UK soccer culture as the show progresses. I have discussed with many friends how the show isn't meant to be hilarious but rather a feel-good show that presents a new culture to North American viewers. Ted Lasso has quickly become one of my favorite shows on the new Apple + streaming platform. Go Greyhounds!

    1. Hey Tyler, thank you for the response. That’s very exciting to hear that you are enjoying the show as much as I am. Taking part in this journey alongside the main character Ted has been very entertaining. I completely agree with your point regarding European sporting culture. While I do mostly watch the English Premier League, I am a large admirer of all the top-flight leagues around Europe and I watch the Champions League as often as I can. I initially thought the show would only succeed in North America, but I have been happy to see a positive reception on Twitter from a handful of European viewers. Go Greyhounds indeed.

  2. Hello Dylan, thank you so much for sharing this week. While I do not come from a family that is passionate about soccer, my whole house has found themselves loving to watch Ted Lasso every week. It is very much a wholesome show that puts an automatic smile on your face. While some may say that streaming services are a distraction/waste of time, it is shows like this one that proves those individuals wrong. I love your exploration of the connection between different platforms, in this case specifically streaming services to music streaming platforms. There are many shows that I have begun to watch, where I have been able to access their music easily. Listening to soundtracks is another way to enjoy a show that you love. There is an HBO show called Euphoria which has an amazing soundtrack and luckily the music from the TV show can be found on music platforms; I access it through Apple music. I think it is very interesting how media platforms and technology are all connected, making our interactions with them easier. For example, Apple watches connect to our iPhones, Youtube links and other website links can be found in people’s Instagram bios, and Tik Toks can be directly sent to people’s Snapchat accounts. A website or a platform is no longer independent, but a part of an entire world that continues to grow.

    1. Hello Taylor, thank you for the response. So glad to hear that your house is enjoying the show. Part of the beauty of this show, in my opinion, is that you don’t have to like soccer (as you have shown), or even any sport for that matter, to enjoy or get something out of the show. While I have not seen any of Euphoria, I am familiar with a few tracks off of the score through recommendations from my friends. This sharing is made possible by the connectivity and the ease of showcasing all kinds of media, as you mentioned. This is both interesting and very exciting. I can’t help but wonder what the future of social media holds and whether these social media apps can grow into industries of work. Thanks again for the response.
