Communicating through symbols on social media
For my first blog post, I will be discussing something I like in the social media universe. Something in the social media universe I like is the ability
to create and engage with content through universal symbols. With Instagram and
other social networking sites, one can let the content creator know they like
their content through double-tapping or “hearting” their image or video signifying
to the creator that they like and appreciate the post. The use of emojis
through social media is also another method that is used to send a message and
engage with others online. Emojis being universal emotion symbols in the
internet sphere enables people with different language backgrounds to interact with
the same content and others and communicate with the use of these symbols. In
the article titled A systematic Review of Emoji: Current Research and Future
Perspectives, the authors state “emoji are an important medium for
interaction and emotional communication on the Internet”. (Qiyu et all, 2019).
They also discuss the ability to express and enhance one’s emotions to others through
the use of emojis.

Great Idea!
ReplyDeleteI too use symbols to communicate everyday on social media and through other communicative platforms as well! I found that ever since these methods became available that they have been translated into different contexts which produce various meanings. From personal experience I can say that this can cause some trouble when interpreted differently. Indeed, the interpretation of these signs and symbols directly correlates with the exploration of semiotics!
Overall, I found this idea to be such a relevant example of how social media employs various opportunities and possibilities to communicate.
