Sports talk shows on YouTube
Hello everyone from CS371! Arguably my favourite entertainment media platforms is YouTube, particularly the channel of my favourite sports talk show, Skip and Shannon: UNDISPUTED. Fresh topics introduced daily regarding everything happening in the sports world makes for a great source of entertainment for sports lovers such as myself. What intrigues me the most about this channel is that I will often find myself arguing through the screen to refute the ridiculous takes that Skip Bayless, the co-host of the show, spews on a daily basis. In additon, the show also has hilarious comedic moments with some of the funniest analogies and stories you can ever hear. It is because of this that I find myself coming back for more each day.
In addition to being one of the top sports talk shows in the Unites States, Skip and Shannon also utilize their 2 million followers on YouTube to address the ongoing issues in America. Shannon Sharpe is an African American who is now in the Football Hall of Fame for his 14 year NFL career. He is the perfect example of spokesperson/creator trying to utilize his enormous platform to invoke public change.
What makes YouTube so great is the fact that it gives billions of people access to billions of videos instantaneously. The variety of videos is enough for anybody to be able to find a string of videos that suits their desires. As many social media applications now do, YouTube uses your search and watch history to introdue you to other videos that match the kind of videos you like to watch. Because of this, I find it very easy to get lost in the bottomless pit of YouTube videos and before I know it, 3 hours have gone by. YouTube is also a place where you can interact with other people and discuss the same video or you can easily share videos with friends.
Hey Justin, as a fellow listener of the Skip and Shannon Undisputed show I really enjoyed reading your post. I too allow myself to get far too frustrated with Skip Bayless when I’m sure he’s consistently trying to make headlines. I am glad you acknowledged the societal good the show tries to achieve by utilizing its platform to address the systematic injustices much of the world faces consistently. I would say youtube as a whole has a much bigger platform and has limitless potential when it comes to achieving and spreading societal good.
ReplyDeleteHey Justin, as an avid sports fan myself I really enjoyed your post. Although I rarely watched Undisputed, I did watch a lot of First Take with Max Kellerman and Stephen A. Smith. The shows have very similar concepts. They debate, create discussion and even share controversial viewpoints about sports (Football and Basketball) primarily. I really liked your point regarding Shannon Sharpe and the influence he has on ongoing racial issues in the United States. It reminds me of the impact that Shaq, Kenny, Charles and Ernie have on TNT. They typically address these issues as well and have massive influence on their viewership. Overall great post!!
