Teleparty - Helping Loved Ones Stay Connected Throughout the Pandemic

Hi everyone! I am Morgan Brown, a 3rd year Communications student with the management option. Looking forward to reading all of your blog posts and having some great discussions this semester!

Today, I wanted to talk about Teleparty, previously known as Netflix Party. Teleparty is an extension you can add on Google Chrome that allows you to watch a show or movie with another person, without having to be in the same room as that person or watching on the same device. My roommate first discovered Teleparty on TikTok at the beginning of the first lockdown. Since we had been sent home early from residence, we did not have a chance to finish the series we were watching together; Teleparty allowed us to finish watching the show together, from home.

This extension has a synchronized playback, where either viewer can play, pause, or skip the video. There is also a chat box on the side of the screen, so that you can watch and still communicate with the other person watching. The extension is compatible with Netflix, Disney+,  HBO, and Hulu (both viewers would need an account to these streaming services).

The pandemic has made it difficult for us to stay connected with friends and family, which is why I wanted to share this extension with the class. It made it a lot easier for me to ‘hangout’ with my friends, boyfriend, and family who I couldn't see, without actually hanging out with them in person!

  1. Hi Morgan, I love using Teleparty with my friends too! During the first lockdown, my friends and I would have movie nights where we would simply use the extension on our personal laptops to watch a movie and chat with one another during it. This was definitely one of my favourite ways of staying connected with those friends and was a unique sort of digital communication that I probably wouldn't have used if it weren't for COVID.

  2. Hi Morgan, I love teleparty because it is a fast and easy extension to download that allows people to watch the same thing on Netflix at the same time but from different devices. This became very popular when the pandemic started because it was a fun way people would hang out virtually. I used this a lot when my friends and my boyfriend at the time when it was hard to see each other. This has a lot of potential now to be used since the pandemic gave it a lot of hype. It can be used more frequently in long distance friendships and relationships.
