The Ancient Foundations of Social Media

For my blog post this week, I will be discussing and reflecting on one of this week’s readings “The ancient foundations of social media: why humans are wired for sharing” by Tom Standage. Standage stated that each month people collectively spend around 300 billion minutes, equivalent to 600,000 years on Facebook which is absurd. He posed a question about what makes checking and going on social media so joyful and compelling. There are many different theories and/or components that might be responsible for this. Humans are inherently social animals and a main why that they assess and maintain their positions within social networks is by exchanging information with and about others. If humans inherently like to gossip and are social creatures, then FaceBook and other social media platforms that allow you to share your experience, display your accomplishments, and communicating with others aggressively feeds those deep-rooted habits which is why social media is so addictive and gratifying
