True Crime Youtube Videos

Hey everyone! My name is Tyler Kitching, I am a fourth-year communications student. Youtube has always been one of my favorite online platforms, as I use it to watch a variety of different videos. A genre of youtube videos that I have been enjoying recently is true crime videos. Channels such as JCS criminal psychology create high-quality videos that analyze real criminal activity in a very professional manner. True crime videos can often be very upsetting for some viewers, however, these channels provide an alternative angle

JCS Criminal Psychology is a channel that analyzes individual murder suspects and the psychological tactics that are used during real police interrogation. Their channel became insanely popular for their video about the 2018 Parkland High School mass shooting. In this video, JCS analyzes the interrogation tactics that Florida Police used to convict the suspect of his crimes. JCS Criminal Psychology does a great job of telling the stories of these horrendous crimes without making the videos disturbing. If you are interested in true crime, I would definitely check out their video titled "What pretending to be crazy looks like". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwt35SEeR9w

  1. Hi Tyler, great post!

Similar to you, I also love true crime stories on any platform! Personally, I often lean towards podcasts because they're a source of entertainment when you're on the go (i.e. doing household chores, homework, commuting, etc.) If you're looking for any suggestions I would definitely check out "Crime Junkie" hosted by Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat, as well as, "My Favorite Murder" hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff.

However, I am also one to watch these types of videos on YouTube when I have time. I highly recommend checking out "Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crime," definitely a really good and eery source or entertainment.

    All the best,
    Keelin

  2. Hey Tyler,
I can totally relate to your interest in true crime videos, especially the one's that discuss criminal psychology. I currently have a minor in criminology and have a strong interest in the subject matter. With this said, I typically watch my true crime media on platforms such as Netflix, Crave, and Prime Video, as they offer a huge selection of professional true crime documentaries and series. One of my favourites to be 'Lieutenant Joe Kenda - Homicide Hunter', in which a true investigator goes back in time and narrates his solved and unsolved cases throughout his many years as a homicide detective! I highly recommend giving it a shot!

  3. Hey Tyler,

Great post and like yourself I to also enjoy watching true crime and crime videos on YouTube and I personally enjoy them more when they have visuals. I have heard about the channel that you have mentioned in your post and have watched the video you described, I can say that it is a crazy video and the in-depth breakdown of the person in the video is very meticulous and interesting to see. Ill have to check out the rest of the channel since the one video was so interesting to watch but the JCS channel is a great recommendation for those who also enjoy true crime.

  4. Hi Tyler, great post!

I also have always used the Youtube platform to watch video content and relate to your interest in true crime series. A few months ago, a video from the JCS channel showed up on my home page and I have been watching their videos ever since! I find it fascinating seeing the breakdown of the interrogation tactics used by the detectives and the behaviour of perpetrators after committing horrific crimes. If you haven’t watched it already, I definitely recommend their videos on “The Case of Chris Watts pt. 1” and “The Case of Chris Watts pt. 2”.

  5. Hey Tyler,

Great post! I can completely see your interest in true crime videos. I also have an interest in true crime, as well as fictional crime videos and podcasts. When I was in high school, my teacher assigned us to write an essay on a true crime podcast and that is where my interest sparked. I think these types of videos are a great type of entertainment for anyone who is interested in crime or psychology.

I will definitely be checking out JCS Criminal Psychology's YouTube channel!

  6. True Crime breakdowns on YouTube are also one of my favourite genres, especially JCS as you mentioned. The rawness of the footage i think is what makes it so appealing. It's also why I try to limit my consumption of these types of videos because they get me thinking in a very paranoid and protective manner which isn't any fun. Interestingly enough, a couple of the criminals that were sentenced on their channel are serving in the Kitchener Institute for Women, which I actually have driven by a couple times. Pretty eerie.

  7. Hey Tyler,

This post started such a good conversation among our peers. I hope that such digital dialogue will help us all become more familiar with one another and be able to engage with one another more comfortably in the classroom! To address your post, I absolutely love true-crime stories and true-crime YouTube videos are among my favourite to watch in my spare time. I also agree with Seif that it is eerie to think that some of the cases we have watched online were committed by people housed so close to us!
