When Social Media Is the Best and The Worst!

Decoding Social Media Algorithms

I decided to write my first blog post on something I recently experienced with my first co-op term this past summer. For this term, I worked as a Digital Marketing Coordinator for a busy, up-and-coming start-up company! With this role, I worked on a magnitude and widely diverse range of tasks, all of which relied heavily on the use of social media.

Before starting this position, I had never thought of the amount of research, analytical data and careful planning that would go into this role. Working with the social media team meant that I had to be ready for quick changes, data alterations and updates, all of which would alter the various algorithms for the different social media platforms! It felt like every time I would finally start to feel comfortable on a particular platform, an update would come out and completely throw me off.

On the contrary, social media is definitely the best; working with this start-up meant that I could watch the sales grow over time along with the engagement, followers and likes. Seeing the correlation between data stemming from specific social media platforms and the sales/attraction towards the website was so fascinating! Social media became our most popular form of marketing, and we even switched over to organic social media marketing compared to paid posts (all due to a spike in demand and being sold out almost continuously!

I never thought of the extent, work and dedication it takes to figure out specific social media platforms, and I will never take it for granted ever again; this role showed me the strength of these apps and how much they suck and rock; at the same time!

  1. Hi Kieran, I really liked your post and hearing about your first co-op term. So many jobs, especially marketing, involve looking at, and having a presence on, almost every social media platform there is. While the majority of people have a love-hate relationship with social media, when actually working with platforms, curating posts, editing, coming up with captions, and all that the job entails, is actually more work than the average person thinks it is. I always see videos promoting being a social media manager, but when I was looking at job positions you have to manage their TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and so many other platforms which is honestly a crazy amount of work. I am not too advanced when it comes to anything social media like editing, posting, stories, etc. so I have a lot of respect for people that can actually keep up with managing all of those platforms.
