Blog #3 Articulation 3 - Abbey Smallwood

For this weeks blog post I chose to do articulation #3. This articulation is about how media artifacts and messages are created and spread as well as manifested in the patio-temporal dynamics of relations of how it came to be.

The two examples that I will be using for this is Martin Luther's 95 theses and the women yelling at a cat meme. Martin Luther printed his 95 theses and spread it all over by distributing his paper on carts, by foot, hanging them on door, and more. He also had reading for people that were unable to read so that they could still have access to the information he was trying to spread. This was the first time that someone was able to spread information to more people since he was able to have copies of his work sent around to different communities and parts of the country. Since this has never been done and the church has priority use of the printing press, Martin Luthers actions revolutionized a new form of media.

In a very different form of media, the women yelling at a cat meme is another example of articulation #3. This meme is very popular and recognizable due to how fast it was able to be spread and the many variations of it. The internet makes it much easier to spread information to people all over the world, when this meme came out it became very popular very fast which caused many people to make their own versions of it. This meme, just like many other popular memes, are great examples of how creativity is used in making them along with production, relations of consumption, and relations of circulation and reception. The way people reacted to when this came out allowed for more consumption because others were distributing it in their own creative way.

  1. Hi Abbey,
After reading your post, it made me think of another meme that is a fantastic example of how much a meme can be circulated once it hits the internet and millions of people have the ability to consume and produce different versions of the meme. The meme that I was thinking about was the one with Drake from his music video Hot Line Bling. The sheer amount of memes that were made just off of two to three pictures taken from a whole music video was absolutely insane. People were able to relate those pictures to practically any aspect of their life whether it was watching tv, people offering you money, how people felt about 2020 vs 2021, and some people even photoshopped a cat head on him. I believe that meme was one of the most popular memes to this date. It was circulated back in 2015, but I sometimes still see it on my feed on certain platforms sometimes.

  2. Hey Abbey,
Great post! I like that you brought up the variations of the meme because this can have a substantial impact on how well a meme does online. For example, many memes can become popular again due to a variation of the original being used for a popular trend, idea, or event currently happening. Therefore, helping the overall spatio-temporal dynamics of the meme but also the popular thing at the time. After reviewing the dynamics of both cultural products, I wonder if Luther's 95 Theses would've been popular now due to the internet and any potential memes that would've been made in relation to the media.
